Just starting out?
Whether it's a biography, a natural history or a novel, knowing where you're going is the secret to success. As a consultant, I can help you assess your potential market, help you decide what kind of publishing future you want your manuscript to have, and help you plan the structure of your book (or revise an outline you've already drafted) to reach your target audience.
As a coach, I can work with you chapter-by-chapter as you write your book from start to finish. I can participate as a first reader throughout the writing process, serve as a sounding board when you run into problems, or merely hold you accountable as you report your progress on a regularly scheduled basis.
Written a book or part of a book, but not sure what kind of help you need? I can read and review your manuscript, then provide you with detailed feedback based on what you tell me about your ultimate goals for the book.
For a pre-agreed-upon fee (based on my initial perusal of your project), I will tell you where your manuscript needs additional detail or development, point out repetitive sections that might benefit from trimming, indicate areas where restructuring could improve the quality of the reading experience, and suggest topics where you might want to do some independent study (e.g., proper use of punctuation in dialogue). I will also point out the strengths of what you've written.
Need a highly qualified editor before you submit your manuscript to an agent or a publisher -- or prior to self-publishing?
In Substantive Editing I bring all my years of editing and publishing experience to the service of your manuscript. I will go through what you have written page-by-page using the Review Function so that you are able to accept or reject each editing suggestion I offer and see what I have done.
I will help you to restructure, reorder and revise to meet the industry standards and expectations of editors and agents, help you communicate what you want to say in the way you want to say it, and deliver a top-quality experience to your readers. Substantive Editing also includes basic Copy Editing.
You will have the opportunity to check out several pages of my substantive editing on your own manuscript at no charge before you decide to proceed with this package.
The editing experience does not get any better than this.
Ready for prime time? Need a fresh set of eyes and a grammar/spelling expert before you go to press? You need my Copy Editing department.
Thinking of self-publishing? I can provide you with advice and guidance on finding a cover designer and a layout artist in order to create a book of which you will be proud!

Some editing components may be sub-contracted but final results will conform to the high standards of The Book Charmer.

Autographing books at a university workshop -- one of my favorite activities! You can be autographing your books in no time, too.
